The tournament was started with the aim of getting more children to play chess in Scotland. For this reason the competition is completely free to play in, has the largest prize fund in the UK for an online junior competition and there are prizes for children of all levels. Chess has so many benefits (see Why chess) and is a perfect online activity that can be done at home.
By running this tournament online we hope that parents and children see that they can find a positive past time that is cheap and can be played anywhere. Gareth Williams (Co-founder of Skyscanner) has sponsored the tournament as he believes chess is a fantastic way to get children problem solving from a young age and encourage them into STEM subjects. There are so many online activities that children get absorbed in – chess is truly a positive one that can teach children so many life skills that are transferrable. It is our hope that children find a new passion for life by participating in this tournament.
