New to chess
At the start of every school term we run a course for complete beginners. The dates for the next course are:
April: 21, 28
May: 5, 12, 19, 26
June: 2, 9, 16, 23
When: Wednesday: 18:45 - 19:30
These classes are a great opportunity to learn chess, socialise and be able to ask questions whenever needed. Classes are online using Zoom and a free website called Lichess alongside it. Each class is £5 and the total cost is £45. The first class is completely free to see if your child enjoys the class. The classes are taken by chess master and founder Andrew Green. If you are interested in joining, please fill out this form.
There are some other wonderful resources out there that we can recommend for those that are new to the game:
Lichess.org: is one of the most popular chess websites to play on and is completely free. They have a page for learning the basics. This is a good place to start for Secondary School pupils.
Chessity: A Dutch website which is fantastic for teaching Primary School children the fundamentals. Children work through a course and receive a certificate upon completion. You can create an account and get a three week trial. After that, you have to pay for membership. If you would like this membership, please get in touch as we can get it heavily discounted (50% off) for our students.
Chesskid: This is a good resource for Primary School children once they know how to play. The best part of this site is the educational videos. It is also a safe place for children to play and solve puzzles. Again, they have a paid membership option and if you are interested in this please get in touch as we get it heavily discounted (50% off) for our students.
